GOAL

Cosmetology, understood both as a branch of medicine and as beauty care, has become one of important elements of modern civilisation. In the developed countries virtually all members of society use cosmetics, whereas a large portion of society benefits from the use of advanced cosmetic technologies, such as professional treatments or hair colouring. Doctors of all specialties often receive visits from patients who are worried about certain symptoms that turn out to be unwanted side-effect of the use of cosmetics. Often, the doctors need to explain to the patients the necessary limitation in the use of cosmetics due to the patient’s health problems. Also, in many cases the doctors can prescribe certain cosmetics as a valid supplement to therapy, e.g. in certain dermatological conditions, post-traumatic treatments, some internal conditions etc. At the same time we observe greater and greater involvement of doctors in the field of aesthetic medicine, including aesthetic dermatology, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, podology and others. Therefore we recognise a growing need for knowledge and expertise in the field of cosmetics among the members of the medical profession – there is a growing need for education about cosmetic ingredients and their action, both with view to unwanted side-effects and to negative legal aspects of their distribution. Our new postgraduate programme endeavours to address this need, offering a carefully drafted and comprehensive curriculum of cosmetic knowledge suited to answer the needs of the medical profession.

The goal of the postgraduate programme is to offer students a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on the practical aspects of cosmetology and covers the following fields: qualities of cosmetic products, effects of cosmetic products, active ingredients, recommendations and methods of usage of cosmetic products and finally methods of effectiveness evaluation. Furthermore, the students study legal aspects of the use of cosmetic products and learn to evaluate the actual effectiveness and usefulness of cosmetic products on the basis of the information provided on the product label.

The programme curriculum consists of lectures (l) and practical classes (p) which can take the form of workshops, demonstrations and lab classes.
